William Irving Shawhan

Funeral service for William I. Shawhan, age 92, of Edgewater, who went to be with the Lord on August 3, 2010 at Hospice of Volusia/Flagler, Edgewater, will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 7, at Settle-Wilder's New Smyrna Beach chapel, with Pastor Daniel Cox, Indian River Baptist Church, officiating. Interment will follow at Sea Pines Memorial Gardens, Edgewater. Friends and family may call from 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. Friday, August 6 at Settle-Wilder chapel.

Bill was born June 1, 1918 in Hepzibah, WV to the late Robert D. and Hattie M. (Beaver) Shawhan. He married Beatrice R. Palmer on April 19, 1946.

A retired, self-employed carpenter who also bought and sold real estate, Bill was a devoted founding member of Indian River Baptist Church. A United States Navy Veteran, he was a POW for 46 months in a Japanese prison camp.

Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Beatrice; daughter Deborah J. (Debby) Shawhan, Pearland, TX, son William I. (Bill) Shawhan and wife Maria of London, Ont., Canada, son Robert D. (Don) Shawhan and wife Nancy of West Milford, WV, and daughter Beatrice M. (Trice) Shawhan of Wiersdale, FL. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Brian Mayfield, Brent Mayfield, Shannon Crowson, Chavaun Parker, Brandie Gonczy, and Ashley Sharpe; eight great-grandchildren, Haley Crowson, Anna Leigh Mayfield, Austin Mayfield, Gavin Shawhan, Justin Freeman, Hunter Freeman, Emma Sharpe, Triana Gonczy and Baby Sharpe due in January. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Victoria L. Mayfield, Jan. 13, 2005 and one grandson, Nathan W. Shawhan, Oct. 25, 1996.

Bill was the last surviving member of his immediate family having been preceded in death by three brothers, Clifford J. Shawhan, Victor E. Shawhan, and Robert H. Shawhan.

He will be sadly missed by his family and friends.
