NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A Brevard County man was charged earlier today with armed robbery for an alleged boat jcking on a New Smyrna Beach man on Wednesday, the Volusia County Sheriff's Odffice said.

The victim had told deputies that during a struggle he believed he had cut the would-be robber across the neck with a pocketknife. He also said his attacker had an oriental symbol tattooed across a finger and that the man had earlier told him that he was from Titusville.

Based on that information, Volusia Sheriff's investigators notified the Brevard County Sheriff's Office to be on the lookout for anyone showing up at a hospital there with the suspect's description and injury.

At about 7:30 Wednesday night a Brevard sergeant notified Volusia investigators that a man matching the description, including a neck injury, was at Canaveral Hospital.

Darin Leutbecker, 38, was subsequently charged with robbery with a firearm, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, use of a firearm during the commission of a felony, grand theft and battery.

After Leutbecker was treated at the hospital for his non life-threatening injury, he was arrested on a robbery with a firearm warrant Volusia County investigators had obtained and booked into the Brevard County Jail with $10,000 bond.

Leutbecker is from Merritt Isle, Florida.
