NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Volusia County Council seat 3 candidate Deb Denys has embraced new tools in helping her get the word out: Internet news and social media.

"The electronic media is where readers are getting their news," Denys said. "I'm getting my message where people are sharing ideas and that's on sites like Facebook and Headline Surfer."

Denys believes its important that she diversifies the options available to her in getting her message across to voters and she's seeing favorable results with platforms like Internet advertising with Headline Surfer, umbrella trademarked name for the New Smyrna Beach-based 24/7 Internet newspaper accessed through HeadlineSurfer.com and also through NSBNews.net and VolusiaNews.net.

"I want to be seen -- for citizens to know where I stand on the issues," said Denys, who qualified by petition in March, vying for the seat held by outgoing incumbent Joie Alexander of Port Orange.

As a guardian ad litem, chair of the Early Learning Coalition of Volusia and Flagler for five years until 2010 and a former elected member of the Volusia County School board, Denys said she's reaching out to families looking for answers in their government, and she's finding her message is resonating with families who get their news through Internet news and who use Facebook to make friends.

Justin Kennedy, an Edgewater city councilman, also vying for the County Council seat representing Southeast Volusia is advertising with Headline Surfer as are incumbent group 8 County Judge Bryan Feigenbaum, State Attorney assistant prosecutors Christopher Kelly and Dustin Havens, vying for the group 4 county judgeship; Steve deLaroche who is running for Clerk of Circuit Court for Volusia County; Rich Gailey who is seeking the County Council seat 5 out of Deltona and Wendell Bradford, who is running for sheriff.
