New Smyrna Beach resident and NSBNews.net co-founder Peter Mallory dead at the age of 77

Peter MalloryNEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Peter Mallory, co-founder of NSBNews.net and a longtime New Smyrna Beach resident, died Thursday at an Orlando hospital. Known for his conservative political views, his award-winning weekly blog was aptly called "The Right Side."

In April 2008, Mr. Mallory helped launch the 24/7 Internet newspaper as co-publisher in a partnership under NSB News LLC. In March, Mr. Mallory retired with the intention of contributing occasional installments of the blog with NSBNews.net coming under the umbrella trade-marked, Headline Surfer. But he was unable because of deteriorating health that led to his passing.

Following is the formal obituary, along with funeral and burial services:
Peter E. Mallory, born March 12, 1935, in Cincinnati, Ohio, passed away peacefully in Florida Hospital, Orlando, on June 28, 2012, following a short cardiac illness. Peter was the son of Harold B. Mallory and Mary I. Mallory, moving to New Smyrna Beach, Florida, as a teenager after his parents bought the Coronado Dunes Motel on NSB. He attended New Smyrna Beach Public Schools where he excelled in several New Smyrna Beach high varsity sports, including football, basketball and baseball. He graduated from NSB High School in 1953, where he met the love of his life, Jacqueline Marlene Altman. Peter then graduated from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1957, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering.
In 1957, Peter and Jackie then married and moved to Boston where Peter continued his education at MIT receiving a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1958. The couple returned to the Orlando area and Peter worked as an Electrical Engineer for Radiation and Martin Marietta. The couple moved to New York for one year where he worked for Cornell Labs then moved back to Orlando. Peter then worked for General Dynamics and later became a partner and founder of Central Florida Technical Services. Throughout his engineering career Peter became respected as one of the top satellite communications experts during the Cold War.
Mr. Mallory was very active in the community having lived in New Smyrna Beach continuously since 1968 and serving on the Board of Trustees of Daytona Beach Community College and the Board of New Smyrna Beach Utilities Commission. He was also a member of the NSB Kiwanis Club, Smyrna Yacht Club, Toastmasters, and tutored high school students in math, history and economics, and coached youth football and baseball for the Southeast Volusia Athletic Athletic Association. Peter and journalist Henry Frederick established the New Smyrna Beach-based NSBNews.net, Florida's first 24/7 Internet newspaper where Peter posted his thoughts and shared his insights on his blog weekly, "The Right Side." His work there garnered a prestigious Florida Press Club award last year for blog writing, including a segment on his son's investiture as a circuit judge.
Peter Mallory was predeceased by his loving wife of 46 years, Jacqueline A. Mallory. He was also predeceased by his parents. Mr. Mallory is survived by his son, The Honorable Peter A. Mallory (Sherri) of Panama City, Florida, and daughter, Elizabeth M. "Betsy" Mallory of Titusville, FL. He is also survived by two loving granddaughters which he called "My Sweeties": Mallory Marie Pumphrey of Titusville; and Mary Christine "Mimi" Mallory of Panama City. Peter is also survived by his brother, Harold I. Mallory (Patricia) of Dallas, Texas; sister-in-law, J'Neese A. Strozier (Dr. Thomas) of Miami, Florida; brother-in-law, Vernon E. Altman (Mary Lee) of Palo Alto, California; and his loving companion, his cat, Minerva. Outside of immediate family, Peter is also survived by his companion of recent years, Sandra Roberts, of New Smyrna Beach.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that you consider making a donation to your favorite charity in memory of Peter. A celebration of life service will be held at Settle-Wilder Funeral Home on Tuesday, July 3, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. The family will receive friends an hour before the service. Interment will follow the service at Edgewater-New Smyrna Cemetery.
