PEOPLE, PLACES & THINGS

SANFORD, Fla. -- David Dinkins the first African-American mayor of New York City who died today at the age of 93, was among myriad bigwigs and countless regular folks I'vehad the good fortune of interviewing over the years.

Many Years, actually.

I interviewed Dinkins in NYC way back in 1992 - 28 years ago to be precise.

I was working as a reporter for the Rockland Journal-News in West Nyack, about an hour's drive acroioss the Tappan Zee Bridge and down Interstate 87 and into the Big Apple. I got this assignment bevause it was my turn on a night shift rotation.

I don't remember much about the interview without looking back at the news clipping, which is in stacks of newspapers in the thousands with my stories. This was before the electtronic age. Suffice to say I may have a couple thousand stories clipped, but tens of thousands I've yet to get to and likeky never will.

Afrer all, I've been reporting news since the mid-1980s. I have always been a high-volume byline producer. Out of the tens of thousands of stories with my name on them (byline) I have a littkle more than a hundred of them recognized as award-winning journalism - half in print and the latter half online in the past eight years.
