ESSEX, VT -- In the wake of the mass shooting in Las Vegas with 58 dead and 500-plus injured, to witness this carnage again and again as a free people?

I was being situated in dialysis, when the reports began coming across the nurses and dialysis techs. Then I turned on my personal TV port. What is wrong with people? Where are we as a people when mass murder becomes normalized?

We do not know all the specifics: but does it matter where a human being uses weapons of war for therapeutic murder? What is wrong with some of our people? Who are we now as a people, in our collective positions as the most-free people on this earth, protected from so much of the world’s ill and horror? I look at this massacre today and I am afraid there is something permanently wrong with our aspects of our culture and I worry we do not have what is required to put things right — as a people, as a society.

These might be premature feelings. I hope they are. God, I hope and pray they are.

Is this an incident where a crazy lone loser among as is evidence of a larger symptom? Or just off by himself — a lone nut; nothing about him that has anything to do with our people, our culture, our country. I don’t know — that’s where the fear comes from.

I pray for all these innocent victims who were enjoying an outdoor country music concert when they found themselves under dire circumstances none could have possibly conceived of beforehand.
