Motorist with gun shot and killed by troopers in Ormond Beach following chase

ORMOND BEACH -- An Ormond Beach motorist who engaged Florida Highway Patrol troopers on a chase at speeds of up to 120, initially south of Edgewater on Interstate 95, was shot and killed in Ormond Beach by four troopers this morning after pointing a gun at them, according to the highway patrol.

Jennifer Manser, 34, was clocked at 120 mph near mile-marker 240 on I-95 northbound in a black Mitsubishi, just south of Edgewater when he gave chase at 10:22 a.m. Three other troopers joined the chase 20 miles further north, near the International Speedway Boulevard exit of I-95 in Daytona Beach, during which, a computer check of the woman's license plate revealed the registrant was a "missing, endangered and armed person."

Manser exited the State Road 40 ramp in Ormond Beach, headed onto Williamson Boulevard and after getting slowed by traffic heading towards Granada, made a U-turn. But as troopers get closer to the slowed vehicle, she pointed a gun at them and the troopers opened fire on her. The woman, who had a history of depression, was pronounced dead at the scene in the 11 a.m. shooting. The 9-mm gun she pointed at troopers turned out to be unloaded and belonged to her Port Orange boyfriend, the highway patrol said.
The boyfriend had reported her missing to police about 2 a.m. Tuesday.

The troopers were placed on administrative lead, standard procedure, while the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigates the use of deadly force, which the highway patrol said was justified here.
