NSB COPS: Man, 23, arrested on child-porn charges; including sexually explicit pictures of a toddler

Kenneth W. Crist, 23, of 605 Goodwin Ave., New Smyrna Beach, was arrested Friday on charges of possessing photos of child pornography.  According to New Smyrna Beach police, the sexually explicit photos possessed by Crist included that of a child no older than 3.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Police uncovered a dirty little secret behind the doors of 605 Goodwin Ave. when they arrived with a search warrant Friday morning. The occupant of the residence, 23-year-old Kenneth W. Crist soon found himself behind bars, charged with possessing pornographic photos of children, New Smyrna Beach police said.

Sheriff's Office: Ormond Beach woman arrested after making false abduction claim

Vicki Teneyck, 54, of Ormond Beach, was arrested Friday after telling deputies she made up a claim of being abducted. 

ORMOND BEACH -- A 54-year-old Ormond Beach woman who claimed to be the victim of an abduction at the hands of a knife-wielding attacker is in jail after Volusia County Sheriff's investigators discovered that the woman's story was just that -- a story.

Winn-Dixie to close one store in Deltona; NSB and Edgewater stores spared as part of major restructuring

DELTONA -- The Winn-Dixie at 1200 Deltona Blvd. is among 30 stores in the Southeast that are closing as part of a restructuring, the Jacksonville-based grocery giant announced Thursday.

The Winn-Dixie on State Road 44 in New Smyrna Beach and the store on U.S. 1 in Edgewater are not affected by the closings, which are expected to be completed by Sept. 22, the company said in a press release.

Daytona Beach cops: Body found in Halifax River reeds identified as that of homeless man

The body of a man that was found in reeds in the Halifax River was identified Wednesday as that of Franklin Lewis Yakym, 51, a homeless man.

DAYTONA BEACH -- The decomposing body of a man found Tuesday in the reeds near the shoreline of the Halifax River on Riverside Drive in Holly Hill has been identified as 51-year-old Franklin Lewis Yakym, who had been living in a homeless shelter, Daytona Beach police said.

Alleged female convenience store robber turns herself in to authorities

Johneschia Allen, 19, is accused of robbing a Daytona Beach-area convenience store.

DAYTONA BEACH -- A teenage woman accused of robbing a convenience store on Derbyshire Road turned herself in Wednesday night to anser criminal charges.

Johneschia Allen, 19, was being held on $30,000 bail at the Volusia County Branch Jail on charges of robbery with a firearm and use of a firearm during a felony.

Sheriff's Office: Amber Alert child found safe in Orange City

ORANGE CITY -- Law enforcement authorities late Thursday afternoon made the safe recovery of a 6-year-old girl who was the subject of an Amber Alert out of Wildwood, Florida.

Volusia County Sheriff's deputies on alert for Karmen Barfield -- the little girl who reportedly was the victim of a parental abduction -- spotted her father's Ford pickup truck in the vicinity of Graves Avenue in Orange City.

Sheriff's Office takes over Oak Hill patrols for 22 hours to allow cops to get firearms certifications

OAK HILL -- Police Chief Diane Young and her five officers were back on patrol mid-day Wednesday, one day after they received firearms certification from the Volusia County Sheriff's Office, which stepped in and policed the community in the interim.
