10-foot gator spotted near Edgewater City Hall from nearby pond trapped and killed

EDGEWATER -- A 10-foot alligator was captured and killed by a gaming hunter Friday afternoon after it was spotted near the entrance to the Edgewater City Hall and where narby children play, city officials said.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A 74-year-old woman passenger was thrown from a three-wheeled motorcycle and killed Friday afternoon on U.S. 1, near Arts Center Avenue, after the rider veered to avoid a construction cone.

Glenda Gene Dubon was pronounced dead at Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach after her initial transport to nearby Bert Fish Medical Center in New Smyrna Beach with critical injuries following the 2:37 p.m. accident.

Fire destroys Edgewater Animal Clinic; 30 animals safely evacuated; no injuries

A fire Friday night destroyed the Animal Clinic of Edgewater on South Ridgewood Avenue, but nearly three dozen animals were safely evacuated and no persons were hurt. EDGEWATER -- The Animal Clinic of Edgewater on South Ridgewod Avenue went up in flames Friday night, but all 30 animals inside were safely evacuated as were the staff, Edgewater Fire Rescue officials said.

A discarded cigarette behind the building is believed responsible for igniting the 5:05 blaze that destroyed the clinic at 2305 S. Ridgewood Ave., with flames shooting through the rook and sending thick smoke into the evening air.

County officials will hold meeting Tuesday to explain comp. plan amendment updates
