NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- The Kiwanis Club of Southeast Volusia is holding its "Strike it Rich" fundraiser May 22 at the Brannon Center, with $10,000 as the grand-prize drawing.

Second place gets you three grand and third place, two grand. Tickets are only $125, (which admits two) with a buffet, open bar, music and dancing. This is the major fundraiser put on annually by Kiwanis to support children's educational and community programs.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. -- The 32nd annual Ed Root Memorial 5K/10K Run id Saturday, Dec. 5, in the downtown waterfront. Race-day registration begins at 7 a.m. at Coronado Civic Center. It begins at 8 a.m.

EDGEWATER -- The New Smyrna Beach High School marching band held its "Jammin’ in the Park" fundraiser on Saturday, April 17, at Hawks Park to raise money for new uniforms. About $3,000 was raied during this event, with the ultimate goal of $30,000 to replace uniforms that have been handed down, patched and re-sewed for 18 years.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Music means rhythm. And rhythm means life. And that's the point behind the "Rock the Cure" theme behind the 2010 Relay for Life cancer fundraiser.

Pam Raquet, a sixth-grade teacher and survivor of cervical and uterine cancer, as well as a brain tumor, understands the concept, which is why she wasn't just a volunteer, but even performed by singing a song during the talent contest.

Having just completed the 2010 Citizen's Academy Program, I wish to thank all City Departments for their presentations and information to the Citizens that took part in the program. I would recommend to any citizen interested in how our city operates to consider going through this program.

He owns the Dairy Queen on U.S. 1 and is a member of the New Smyrna Beach Planning Board. He and his wife, Jess, 29, big-time supporters of the event, were on hand Friday with their two children, Truman, 18 months old, and Isla, 4 months old.
