Top 500 Wrestlers Ranked: 'American Dream' Dusty Rhodes 25th best among the greats

Dusty Rhodes snapshot / Headline Sufer®Dusty Rhodes remembered by WWE on Twitter / Headline Surfer®DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- "The American Dream" Dusty Rhodes is ranked 25th best among the top 500 greatest wrestlers of the past 65 years.

Wrestling ReWind presents its latest top 500 poll in honor of Rhodes, who died Thursday in Orlando, reportedly after a fall. He was 69.

The 25th ranking among the top 500 wrestlers truly demonstrates Rhodes' standing among the pro wrestling greats.

Rhodes, with his roly-poly girth, was not a hulking figure like the immortal Hulk Hogan, the No. 1 of the top 500 wrestlers in the Wrestling ReWind rankings. But Rhodes played to his strengths with that girth as the "blue collar son of a plumber."

It was something that put him over with the fans almost from the start and many -- old and new alike -- have have identified with him over the years one of their own compared to the body donnas that graced the squared-circle like "Ravishing" Rick Rude, the Ultimate Warrior and "Superstar" Billy Graham, the latter one of Rhodes' foremost opponents.

As described in Wikipedia, Virgil Riley Runnels Jr. (October 12, 1945 – June 11, 2015), better known as "The American Dream" Dusty Rhodes, was an American professional wrestler and trainer who worked for WWE. He made occasional on-air appearances on WWE television and pay-per-views and worked as a backstage booker and producer in WWE's NXT developmental territory.

Billed as "the son of a plumber," Rhodes did not have a typical wrestlers' physique. His character was that of a working man and he was known for his charisma and his interviews, such as his "Hard Times" promo.

Rhodes was a three-time NWA world heavyweight champion, and during his time in Jim Crockett Promotions (the forerunner of World Championship Wrestling or WCW), he was a former United States champion, and multi-time television, world tag team, and six-man tag team champion. He also won many regional championships during his wrestling career, and is one of six men inducted into each of the WWE, WCW, Professional Wrestling, and Wrestling Observer Newsletter Halls of Fame.

He is the father of Dustin "Goldust" Rhodes and Cody "Stardust" Rhodes, who both currently wrestle for WWE.

Though Rhodes has a long history of wrestling in Tampa, he has made appearances in Daytona Beach where WWE and the former WCW have featured pay-per-view events at the Ocean Center over the last couple of decades.

Though Rhodes never wrestled at the Ocean Center, In the 1970s and '80s, he did wrestle at Bethune-Cookman University a couple of times. Both his sons, Dustin Runnells (Goldust) and Cody Rhodes (Stardust), have wrestled at the Ocean Center on WWE cards in recent years.

Dave Meltzer of wrestlingobserver.com reported that Rhodes fell while in his Orlando home, requiring him to be hospitalized Wednesday and as a result suffered complications that led to his passing on Thursday.

The WWE, where Rhodes worked with its NXT brand in Orlando, issued the following statement shortly after his death Thursday: "Runnels became a hero to fans around the world thanks to his work ethic, his impassioned interviews and his indomitable spirit."

WWE added Rhodes was a "dedicated father … a caring husband and a creative visionary who helped shape the landscape of WWE long after his in-ring career had ended."

Added retired grappler "Nature Boy" Ric Flair, the No. 3 ranked wrestler in the Wrestling ReWind top 500, in an interview with TMZ after Rhodes' passing was announced: "Today I lost one of my greatest opponents and greatest friends. He was the definition of heart and soul and I’m honored to have shared the ring with him countless times. He became the 'American Dream' because wrestling needed a hero they could respect, and he was the man for the job. Dusty Rhodes, I will miss you my mentor and friend."

Here is the Wrestling ReWind Ranking of the Top 500 Wrestlers (1970-present):

1. Hulk Hogan

Hulk Hogan No. 1 in Wrestling ReWind Top 500 Wrestler Rankings / Headline Surfer®HulkHogan's catchphrase for all his little Hulkamaniacs / Headline Surfer®With his 22-inch "pythons" (biceps) and his finisher, the leg drop, Hulk Hogan was a force to reckon with inside the squared-circle.

He had many a catch phrase for his opponents, but there was one that resonated outside the ring for children who looked up to him: "To all my little Hulkamaniacs, say your prayers, take your vitamins and you will never go wrong."

Hogan was the bridge between the World Wide Wrestling Federation and regional programming -- Northeast -- featuring Bruno Sammartino in black trunks -- and the rock 'n wrestling connection with the early '80s MTV generation that ushered in "Wrestlemania" and a litany of pay-per-view programming for a global audience under the banner of the World Wrestling Federation.
 Hogan was even featured in a Saturday morning cartoon, as cartoonish as wrestling became before he moved on to WCW in the late '90's, to form the villainous NWO with the "Outsiders" Kevin Nash and Scott Hall. which forced the WWE to assemble a new cast of characters in what became the "Attitude Era," for the WWF before yet another name change to WWE.
Along the way, whether he was yellow T-shirt ripping Hulkster pointing his finger at his opponent in turning a match in his favor or as the dastardly "Hollywood" Hulk Hogan with the shoe polish-like beard in leading the NWO, and as "Thunderlips" in his cameo in Rocky III in putting a hurting on Sylvester Stallone, Hulk Hogan was the driving force in ushering wrestling into the modern era as "sports entertainment."

Three events that stand out most in Hulk Hogan's pro wrestling career:
1. Defeats the Iron Sheik for the WWE Championship at on Jan. 23, 1984, at Madison Square Garden with the American hostage crisis in Iran as the backdrop;
2. Does the near-impossible when he scoops up and body slams 500-pound Andre the Giant at WrestleMania 3 on March 29, 1987;
3. Becomes the the third member (mystery partner) of the newly-formed NWO with Hall & Nash against Randy Savage, Lex Luger & Sting at the WCW "Bash at the Beach pay-per-view on July 7, 1996, at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach, Fla.

2. The Undertaker

The Undertaker loses to Brock Lesnar at Wrestlemania XXX / Headline Surfer®List of Undertaker's Wrestlemania opponents / Headline Surfer®The Undertaker, No. 2 in top 500 Wrestling ReWind top 500 / Headline Surfer®He's the phenom, the hardest-working wrestler who carried the WWE when Hogan defected to World Championship Wrestling. And he's the longest-tenured wrestler in WWE, going back to his 1990 debut.

But he's perhaps best known for "The Streak." He's The Undertaker, and without a shadow of a doubt, is second only to the Hulkster in the top 500 rankings here.
Mark William Calaway (born March 24, 1965), began his wrestling career with World Class Championship Wrestling (WCCW) in 1984. After wrestling for WCW as "Mean" Mark Callous from 1989-1990, he signed with the WWF. He won his first WWF title in 1991, defeating Hogan.
Known for drawing super-natural strength from the urn carried by manager Paul Bearer, The Undertaker, is the storyline half-brother of fellow WWE wrestler Kane, with whom he has alternately feuded and teamed with as "The Brothers of Destruction."
And known for his signature phrase "Rest in Peace," with his eyes rolling back in his head and his tongue sticking out, The Undertaker has had several make-overs, including that of "The American Badass," a biker in clad in leather on a custom chopper, which he rode to the ring.
But, it's The Streak, 21 consecutive Wrestlemania victories, before it was snapped at Wrestlemania XXX by Brock Lesnar, that is The Undertaker's true calling card.
FAST FACTS:
• The Undertaker also won the 2007 Royal Rumble. He's a 4-time WWF/E champ, 3-time World Heavyweight champ, and 1-time USWA Unified World Heavyweight champ.
• The Undertaker is married in real life to former WWE diva champ Michelle McCool.
Did You Know?
The Undertaker is known for being managed by Paul Bearer, but he's had a lot of managers in his stellar career. He was brought into WWE by Ted DiBiase, who then handed him over to the red-faced televangelist, Brother Love, before Bearer took over. Before his Undertaker days, he was managed in WCW by Teddy Long and Paul E. Dangerously (Paul Heyman).
