DeLand motorcycle cop suffers leg injury in crash

DELAND -- A motorcycle officer suffered a serious leg injury earlier today when his bike collided with a small truck that turned into his path and that of another motorcycle officer at the intersection of Woodland Boulevard and and Plymouth Avenue, the Florida Highway Patrol reported.

Volusia County to meet with union for firefighters Tuesday

DELAND -- Staff from the Volusia County Personnel Division will meet with representatives of the International Association of Firefighters union, which represent county firefighters, from 1:30 - 5 p.m. Tuesday, to discuss collective bargaining negotiations.

The meetings will be in the second floor conference room of the Volusia County Personnel Division, 230 N. Woodland Blvd., Suite 262, DeLand.

Sheriff's Office investigating Deltona abduction; victim released uninjured

DELTONA -- Volusia County Sheriff's investigators are working to unravel a home invasion Tuesday in Deltona in which a 28-year-old woman was reportedly
abducted at gunpoint, before being released unharmed, agency spokesman Gary Davidson reported.

He said deputies are interviewing her, piecing together Tuesday's events and searching for the suspects.

Ormond Beach motorist killed in multi-vehicle crash on S.R. 40

ORMOND BEACH -- A 35-year-old Ormond Beach woman was killed 6:30 a.m. Wednesday when she lost control of her car and struck two other vehicles on State Road 40, near Interstate 40, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Misty Joan Driggers was westbound on S.R. 40 near Shadow Crossings Boulevard, when she lost control of her car, crossed the median and struck an oncoming motorist from Ocala before rolling over and striking another driver from Ormond Beach.

Daytona Beach condo fire causes $100K in damage

DAYTONA BEACH -- A fire Monday on the third floor of the six-story Overlook South Condominiums, 100 Seabreeze Blvd., was contained to that unit and the one above with damages estimated at $100,000, Daytona Beach Fire Department officials said.

Flames and smoke were shooting through a third-floor window when firefighters arrived at 12:30 p.m., said Daytona Beach Fire Lt. Fred Godawa. That unit sustained fire and smoke damage. The window to the unit above that one was also blown out with the upper unit sustaining mostly smoke damage.

LIibraries offer half-price fines for overdue books

DELAND -- Volusia County's 16 public libraries are asking patrons to help them reduce costs by returning overdue materials and paying their fines.

The libraries will allow patrons to close the book on fines before a new and stricter policy takes effect Feb. 1. From Jan. 25 - 31, patrons may return overdue items and pay half the price of accrued fines. They also can pay off fines on their account for half-price.
