Santa to make Dec. 10 'Toys for Tots' stop in New Smyrna Beach on FEC train

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- When Santa brings toys for tots in December he'll be giving Rudolph and the other reindeers the day off and instead will arrive by train -- courtesy of the Florida East Coast rail -- from Jacksonville to Miami with New Smyrna Beach one of the stops along the way.

Ormond Beach police and fire calls answered for the week ending Oct. 14

ORMOND BEACH -- The police department made 19 arrests and issued 113 citations during the week ending Oct. 14.
In all, police handled 1,437 calls for service during the week, including 159 traffic stops and 117 reports being written.

The Ormond Beach Fire Department dealt with 124 incidents during the week. Here is that agency's breakdown: 54 EMS calls, four motor vehicle accidents, 10 fire alarms, 31 public assists and 16 hazardous.

Opening night barren at Pub 44

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Biketoberfest was quieter than a lawn mower on the first night of the four-day weekend at what is soon to be an extinct Pub 44. Just after midnight there were three Harleys in the parking lot and one bicycle. Last year's Biketoberfest recession is this year's depression, at least through the first 24 hours at what for the last couple of decades or so has been the ground zero for bikers, babes and booze.
