Jack M. Sapp

Jack M. Sapp, age 77, of New Smyrna Beach, died Saturday at home with his family present. Born in Gainesville, Jack came here at age two and has been a lifetime area resident. A 1952 graduate of New Smyrna Beach High School, he went on to the University of Florida, where he was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity, the Block and Bridle Club, and the Marketing Society. In 1956 he received B.S. and B.A. degrees in business marketing.

Having grown up in the grocery business, Jack was owner of five Jiffy Food Stores for 25 years, selling them in 1989 to retire. Active in civic life, he served as director of the Bank of New Smyrna and Southeast Bank of Florida; was a director of the New Smyrna (now Southeast Volusia) Chamber of Commerce serving as president in 1972; and was a director of the Southeast Volusia Hospital District from 1973 to 1989 serving as chairman for 2 years of that tenure.

Jack was an avid outdoorsman, who enjoyed hunting, fishing, and boating. Those activities included a 51 year membership in the Anglers Yacht Club, where held every office and was a three time commodore; being president of the Halifax Sport Fishing Club in 1974 and 1975; and a 25 year membership in the Samsula Hunt Club, serving on its board of directors for 10 years. He won numerous fishing tournaments, including one in Hawaii, and hunted throughout the United States and Central and South America.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Patricia; two sons, Jay of Port Orange, and Mike of Clermont; and four grandchildren whom he dearly loved. He was preceded in death by his parents, J. A. and Olga Sapp, and his sister, Barbara Hall.

A funeral to celebrate Jack's life will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at the Settle-Wilder New Smyrna Beach Chapel, with the Rev. David Starkey, Servants' Quarters Fellowship, officiating. Entombment will be in the All Faiths Mausoleum of Sea Pines Memorial Gardens. A reception will immediately follow at the Anglers Yacht Club. Friends may call from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
