Helen "Country Girl" Colgan

Memorial service for Helen "Country Girl" Colgan, age 73, of New Smyrna Beach, who died Wednesday at Hospice Care Center, Port Orange, will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 4, 2010, at Settle-Wilder Chapel, New Smyrna Beach, with Chaplain Laura Walters Baskett, Hospice of Volusia/Flagler, officiating. Entombment of cremated remains will follow at Edgewater/New Smyrna Cemetery.

Born in Miami to Chester and Philena Ward Hentz, Helen moved to New Smyrna Beach in 1954 from Miami, via DeLand. While in school in Miami, she was a member of the Civil Air Patrol. In New Smyrna, among other things, she was a commercial fisherman, and most recently, received her certificate as a CNA, working in home health care. Ms. Colgan was the Volunteer coordinator for Halifax Humane Society, loved NASCAR, especially Dale Earnhardt, but her greatest love was her family, especially those grandchildren.

Survivors include 4 daughters, Sabrina Saccucci of St. Petersburg, Pamela Colgan of Edgewater, Sheryl "Rusti" Hine of Marshall, Arkansas, Philena Hamilton of Holly Hill; 4 sons, Michael Edward Koziski of Lincoln, Nebraska, Jeffrey Dean Koziski of Pinellas Park, Robert Colgan of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Kevin Colgan of Port Orange; sisters, Mary Ann Mayfield of Port Orange, Linda Lee Butcher of Micanopy, a brother Kevin Heiser of Gainesville, a step brother, Duane Heiser of West Palm Beach, a step sister, Andrea Robertson of Royal Palm Beach; 18 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

The family suggests memorial donations be made in her name to Halifax Humane Society, 2364 W. LPGA Blvd., Daytona Beach, FL 32120, or Hospice of Volusia/Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129.
