Calling all volunteers: The Chamber welcomes volunteerism

The SE Volusia Chamber of Commerce is seeking volunteers from all walks of life for all types of jobs. As we gear up for a busy 4th quarter and the New Year, we are working on our strategic plan for 2011, new Board of Directors, new Executive Committee and new direction.

With the upcoming program of work, we need more volunteers and support now more than ever.

For the Chamber’s Visitor Information Center desk in New Smyrna Beach, we need volunteers to answer the telephone, greet visitors, and provide area information and referrals to our Chamber members.

For the Edgewater Branch office, we are seeking business people as well as retired individuals to answer the telephone, provide information about the area and refer Chamber member businesses to visitors.

As you know, the Committees are the backbone of the Chamber and carry out the initiatives of the Board of Directors. We have many great Committees to choose from:

Ambassadors: Chair, Sherry Miller, Regions Bank - The most active committee! This committee holds Ribbon Cuttings weekly for new members, greets people at the Business After Hours, and serves as representatives of good will for the Chamber.

Membership: Chair, Debora Schmeltz, Bayview Insurance Specialists - This committee works on continually providing value added benefits for our members. They coordinate new member orientations, business seminars, communications, Coffee with the President, Lunch & Learn and many more programs.

Education: For next year, we want to reinstate the Education Committee to work with our local educators to help our students learn to become entrepreneurs and skilled employees. We are looking for a chair for this committee and for volunteers to work on this committee and the Annual Crystal Apple Awards.

Economic Development: Chair, Kenneth Bohannon, P.L. – This committee works closely with local and state governments to ensure that existing businesses continue to prosper and grow and work on new incentives to entice businesses to relocate to our area.

Legislative Affairs: Chair, Lee Griffith, Hidden Lakes Golf Course – This committee also works closely with our local, state and federal governments to promote legislation that helps businesses and creates jobs. For example, a local manufacturer asked for the Chamber to help fight to lower tangible taxes that the County levies against the purchase of capital equipment and how this makes it difficult to grow his business.
