Inaugural Veteran's family appreciation parade to be held 4 p.m. today in New Smyrna Beach

S. Truett Cathy, a New Smyrna Beach resident, World War II Veteran and well-known founder of Chick- Fil-A, is the grand marshal of Saturday's inaugural Veterans and Veteran's Family Appreciation Parade in New Smyrna Beach.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- VFW Post 4250 is hosting the inaugural Veterans and Veteran’s Family Appreciation Parade at 4 p.m. Saturday

The staging point will be at Buena Vista Park on the North Causeway beginning at noon. The parade route will go East to Orange Street, South to Canal Street, and end at Old Fort Park. A brief ceremony will take place recognizing S. Truett Cathy, a New Smyrna Beach resident, World War II Veteran and well-known founder of Chick- Fil-A.

Cathy is also widely known for his work with children.Through the WinShape Center Foundation he operates foster homes for more than 120 children, sponsors a summer camp that has hosted more than 21,000 children since 1985, and had provided college scholarships for more then 16,500 students.

“It is an honor and a privilege for us to have Mr. Cathy take the time to be with us for this parade.” said Brett Harper, VFW post commander.

The VFW promotes numerous scholarship programs, funding for the National Home for Children and UnMet Needs, a program for Veterans and the families of those currently deployed.

The parade is open to anyone wishing to participate in appreciating those who served, those who are serving and the family’s of our troops who sacrifice so much, Harper said

“I have a feeling New Smyrna Beach has never seen a parade quite like this” Harper added. “It should be quite a spectacle and fun for the whole family.” -
