PORT ORANGE -- Volusia County School Board dist. 3 incumbent Stan Schmidt won re-election to a second term in Tuesday's general elections by a narrow margin, crediting New Smyrna Beach upstart Sharon Luebbers with running a strong campaign.

"She ran a good race ands she's to be commended for that," said Schmit, who took 50,67 percent of the votes in unofficial results from the Volusia Department of Elections.

Schmidt said he had help in the runoff to the general election from fellow Port Orange resident Maredy Hanford who came in third among the three in the Aug. 24 primary. Only the top two from that election could move forward into the Nov. 2 runoff.

Now Schmidt has to deal an even biggesr fight and that's getting a handle on school on ever-shrinking state funding for the school district .

"You're back in now," Schmidt said of his re-election, "but then there are a lot of things to do now. It's going to be a real challenge."
