NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- The Bert Fish Medical Center Foundation will honor Charlie and Elaine Meyer at its annual National Philanthropy Day Dinner for their generosity in making college more affordable for New Smyrna Beach High School grads.

Now retired, Charlie and Elaine Meyer of New Smyrna Beach established an endowment that funds scholarships for graduates from New Smyrna Beach high school's medical academy. For the last three years, the couple's endowment has supported an annual $2,500 scholarship for a medical academy graduate who plans to pursue a healthcare career.

"We set up the endowment because both Elaine and I were fortunate enough to be able to attend college with the assistance of scholarships," said Charlie Mayer, who played football on scholarship for the University of Tennessee. "We are so pleased to have received hand-written letters from the scholarship recipients who keep us informed about their academic progress as they go through school."

The scholarships are administered by the Foundation at Bert Fish Medical Center, which partners with the medical academy and provides internship and job shadowing opportunities to the students.

The BFMC Foundation is honoring the Meyers during its National Philanthropy Day dinner from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.  Thursday, Nov. 18 at Sugar Mill Country Club.

"We're grateful for Charlie's and Elaine's generosity," said Bob Williams, CEO of BFMC. "The scholarships provided by the Meyer endowment make a tremendous impact on the lives of local students who want to pursue higher education."

The celebration is open to the public and tickets are $30 each. To purchase tickets, call (386) 424-5015 by Friday, Nov. 12.
