Would be nice to see something cheery once in a while on the news

I try not to watch the news but every now and then it is on while I am doing something else so I hear it. Tonight was one of those times and let me just tell you a couple of things I heard. These should help explain to you why I don’t like to watch.

One item was about a council lady in Windermere who resigned her position after her husband punched the mayor at the last council meeting and knocked him out. She said it was in the best interest of the city for her to resign.

You think?

Next, I heard about a councilman in Lake Wales who wants to run for mayor but his past as a Grand Dragon of the Ku Klux Klan has come to the attention of the community. It apparently was well covered when they voted him into the council position, but no one wants a racist mayor. He says he quit the KKK in 1988 and doesn’t agree with violence nor is he racist any more.

I’m not saying people can’t change but I wouldn’t vote for him.

Then there was a story about a local college girl who wrote a column about the law that says if you are born in the U.S. you are automatically a citizen. She said she felt that the law needs to be revised so that babies of illegal aliens do not become citizens (who are being called anchor babies). She feels allowing this is costing our country too much money.

When asked by the television reporter, the college newspaper editor said he wasn’t upset that he published this article and he was surprised that such a brouhaha has erupted from it. His view is that the constitution gives her the right to have the article published. A couple of professors apparently did not like the article and sent e-mails making this whole affair stand out to the local press.

The news show also reported on a new bill being perused that would tax us for the miles we drive in our cars and trucks.

How absurd is that?

Later was a spot about how soon we can have marijuana stocks in our portfolios.

Add these local things to the ongoing world affairs ie: another major aftershock in Japan, more bad news about those melting reactors, and the uprisings in the middle east and you can see why I simply don’t want to hear anymore.

There must be good news they could report. Couldn’t they sprinkle some feel-good news into all this bizarre, weird miserable news?

Come on you guys, give us a break!
