Nancy Pelosi's liberal agenda not the recipe for strengthening our country at home and abroad

“The fact is, elections shouldn’t matter as much as they do.” It’s disconcerting to see this statement by a member of the U.S. House in light of the uproar going on in the Middle Eastern countries.  Not just any member, mind you, but the Democtrats' leading voice on Capitol Hill, former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.

People are engaging in desperate battles just to have a voice at the table in Libya, Egypt, Bahrain and even in relatively peaceful Saudi Arabia.

The “rebels” have fought valiantly with a motley cache of weapons that are almost primitive when used by a ragtag alliance against tanks and planes. Yet Pelosi thinks we should all get along and have ”shared values.”

Pelosi's quote opening this blog was made at Tufts University on April 8.

She prefaced this outrageous sentence with a desire for “shared values, education, children, growth of the economy, how we defend our country, security, civil liberties and respect for our seniors. If we don’t have shared values, then that can be problematic for the country as you can see now.”

Just so you know where I stand, let’s look at each of those issues in relation to reality. I’ll leave my comments on those pesky free elections till later. Abolish the Department of Education.

The National Education Association’s handling of education is abysmal. Just look at the ratings in reading, math and science compared to the rest of the world.

In a chart published in December in the Guardian.uk, reading scores ranged from 314 to 556. The U.S. comes in at 500. The math scores range from 331 to 600; US is 487. Science scores run from 330 to 575; the U.S. ranks 502.

This is nothing to be proud of and illustrates that throwing hundreds of millions of dollars at teachers does not result in top notch students. Personally, I think it’s weird that students in Estonia score much higher than ours.

The system is broken in America.

Doing the same as we have done the past 30 years is no longer the answer. Tenure should be abolished and teachers paid on merit. So if Miss Smith produces little geniuses, she qualifies for big bonuses.

I’m semi-allergic to most children simply because they have no boundaries, manners or expectations. Parents can’t just hatch them without a real commitment to raising them to be productive adults in society. I wish every child had two parents who would love and nurture them throughout their lives.

Unfortunately, this is not so.

Many children have no fathers and grow up with the values of welfare and a free lifetime supply of government largesse. Liberals call these programs “entitlements” and apparently would like all Americans to qualify. Not good for the future of our country.

The growth in our economy is non-existent thanks to the spending spree by our government over the past 20 years.

As every family knows, you cannot survive if you continually spend more than you earn. Since government never earns anything and spends like drunken Martians (would never denigrate our wonderful Navy guys), we’re moving headlong into a great depression.

One way to help Americans would be to allow insurance to be sold over state lines.

You’ll hear lots more about the economy in future articles. For the sake of my readers, I’m going to combine security and how we defend our country as they are really the same. Open borders must be closed. E-verify must be used for every employee for every job.

Our flip-flopping president hated us being in Iraq and Afghanistan so he jumped right into a war in Libya after bouncing Hosni Mubarak out of power in Egypt. And just to further put liberal readers into a rage, we need to profile for terrorists.

That’s a no-brainer.

Our civil liberties have disappeared at an alarming rate as the federal government depletes the contents of our wallets and spends tax dollars as if it owns them. There is virtually no area of our lives that has been left untouched.

Do you actually think you have any privacy left?

Some in Washington want to “regulate” the Internet. Seeing how successful they have been with banks and auto companies, I’m not looking forward to their ideas on this subject.

As a newly minted senior, a big concern is the future. Not necessarily mine, but for my friends’ grandchildren who are already saddled with a $42,000 boat anchor to pay off current government debt.

Should Social Security be reformed?

Of course.

We’ve known that for decades and have been through a multitude of horror stories. But now these aren’t just stories; they are real. It’s a little hard to prepare for my future when the savings that took a lifetime to accumulate are earning a paltry .75 percent.

How about Medicare reform?

Again, yes.

Give it back to the individual states to handle and we’ll immediately see competition, immense savings and better care.

America grew strong on individual freedom, a dedication to God, family and country.

It isn’t too late to return to the values of previous generations. You can be sure that future generations won’t thank us if we don’t address current problems today.

FAST FACTS

Photo and factoid courtesy of Wikipedia / Nancy Pelosi represents one of the safest Democratic districts in the country. Democrats have held the seat since 1949, and Republicans, who currently make up only 13 percent of registered voters in the district, have not made a serious bid for the seat since the early 1960s. She has the distinction of contributing the most among members of Congress to other congressional campaigns because she does not need the campaign funds. In 2002, after Richard Gephardt resigned as minority leader to seek the Democratic nomination in the 2004 presidential election, Pelosi was elected to replace him, becoming the first woman to lead a major party in the House.
