NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- The Utilities Commission of New Smyrna Beach, in conjunction with the American Water Works Association, welcomes "Drinking Water Week 2011," an annual celebration of our most precious natural resource.

Throughout the week, UCNSB will celebrate water by recognizing the essential role it plays in our daily lives, with special attention to our community’s water infrastructure and conservation.

The utilities commission declared May 1-7 "Drinking Water Week" with a proclamation read and approved at the April 18 regular. "Throughout the week, the utilities commission will celebrate water by recognizing the essential role it plays in our daily lives, with special attention to our community’s water infrastructure and conservation," said Ellen Fisher, the commission's spokeswoman.

UCNSB will host a tour of our facilities Thursday, May 5, starting at noon at the main office building, 200 Canal St.

"The bus tour will feature our Water Reclamation Facility, Water Treatment Plant and the Electric/System Operations building," Fisher said. "In addition, participants will learn about UCNSB’s water conservation education efforts with our water-wise demonstration garden at the main office building.

Fisher added, “This is an amazing opportunity to learn how your local municipal utility works for you to bring you safe, reliable drinking water and electric service. Our employees take pride in the jobs they do, and look forward to sharing their knowledge with our valued customers.”

Drinking Water Week has been recognized for more than 35 years by AWWA and communities. "It has represented a unique opportunity for both water professionals and the communities they serve to join together to recognize the vital role water plays in our daily lives," Fisher said.
