Port Orange cops: Young man threatening suicide in apartment surrenders peacefully

PORT ORANGE -- The SWAT team was called out after a 20-year-old man barricaded himself in his Floral Springs Boulevard apartment with his two roommates inside and threatened to kill himself Friday afternoon. Neighboring residences were evacuated and the young man was talked into surrendering peacefully to a hostage negotiator, Port Orange police said.

The man was taken into custody and transported to Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach for psychiatric evaluation under Florida's Baker Act.

The roommates had called police just before 3 p.m. to say the third roommate was depressed and talked of killing himself.

A short time later, the man inside the apartment agreed during a phone call with the hostage negotiator to come out and the standoff was over. NSBNews.net is not releasing the man's name because of the nature of the incident.

There were no injuries and police recovered several firearms.
