Oak Hill clerk's unprofessional behavior adds to city's reputation as 'Joke Hill'

OAK HILL -- I’ve been reading with interest the fiasco that Oak Hill has become. What puzzles me most is why the city doesn’t find it necessary to do background checks on all its employees.

I thought that was standard practice these days. Sure sounds like something they need to adopt down there.

I worked in a nursing home for 15 years and no one, not even the people who cleaned the toilets, were allowed to be hired until a clear background check was obtained. I also have real estate and mortgage broker licenses and for those you not only get background checked but also fingerprinted. Good policy!

As for City Clerk/Administrator Laura Goodearly and her ridiculous behavior in holding up a paper to hide her face and asking not to be filmed by the media, does she not know that as a public employee she needs to at least try to act professionally?

How juvenile was holding that paper over her face?

Some say she has paid the price for her “crime” of driving under the influence of alcohol and should be left alone. I say if that was known prior to her being hired they should have moved on and hired someone else.

Same with ex-coke head Police Chief Diane Young. How the ?-*^# did she get in that position?

She is supposed to be in charge and set an example for her officers. Some example!

This town has earned its nicknames -- "Soaked Hill" and "Joke Hill" and others equally demeaning and that’s too bad because the citizens are decent folk who had no choice in some of these hirings, but are now ashamed to even say they live there.

Ms. Dana Thompson, an Oak Hill resident and ex-wife of former Mayor Mike Thompson, asked on Facebook why nothing is said about the good being done in the city.

My answer to that is if you get your leadership straightened out, then the only things to write about will be good things. She cannot expect the press to ignore the mess that has been made of the city, can she? If so she is delusional.

Guess that’s part of the problem there. Delusion and apathy allow this sort of behavior from city officials.

The townspeople need to get involved and demand some new rules and new leaders. They need to get out and vote and stop being Joke Hill.
