Moving at the speed of government

Mayor's Message
By Adam Barringer

After 21 years of having plans to pave Paige Avenue (road behind Denny's, Taco Bell & McDonalds), it has been completed.

This endeavor happened because of citizens who were involved, remained resolute, and a city commission that took action.

Twenty-one years to pave a road is to be considered "the speed of government!"

Another project that has been moving at "the speed of government" is the beautification of the medians along State Road 44 coming in from Iinterstate 95; the beautification of the State Road 44 and I-95 exchange; and signage to let travelers know they have arrived in the City of New Smyrna Beach (on West S.R. 44 and the north and south entrances along U.S. 1).

Well folks, the conceptual plans have been drawn and grant dollars of approximately $1.4M have been allocated to our city from U.S. Department of Transportation and the Florida Department of Transportation.

On May 24, the conceptual plans will be revealed to the city commission for approval. The approved design and paperwork must be submitted ASAP in order to receive the grants by September.

We could actually see these improvements begin by the end of the year, a major goal for this city commission.
