NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Hundreds paid tribute to the war dead on this Memorial Day holiday at Riverside Park with patriotic speeches, the sound of bagpipes and the playing of "Taps."

In the video to the left, World War II veteran George Dexter addresses the crowd. In the video to the right, retired Col. Irving Davidoff, a World War II veteran and acting chief of information for the Army at the Pentagon, gives an interview on camera with NSBNews.net.

It was an emotional ceremony for Mayor Adam Barringer, who welcomed his fiancee, Shannon Sumner's son, L-Cpl. Cody Sumner of the Marines 2-9 Gulf Company on leave from Afghanistan.

Other dignitaries and speakers included Congresswoman Sandy Adams and retired World War II veteran George Dexter. The event was sponsored by the city of New Smyrna Beach.

New Smyrna Beach City Commissioners Jack Grasty and Judy Reiker, in the left and right videos, respectively, speak with NSBNews.net about the Memorial Day festivities at Riverside Park. It was an especially emotional ceremony Grasty, who was injured in combat in Vietnam. Both loved the bagpipes, but in terms of the spirit of the holiday they were particularly moved by "Taps."

Congresswoman Sandy Adams and Mayor Adam Barringer, in videos to the left and right, respectively, addressed the Memorial Day crowd at Riverside Park with references to those who have served or continue to serve our great nation.
