Ormond Beach cops: Daytona Beach man electrocuted while trimming large palm tree; pronounced dead short time later at hospital

ORMOND BEACH -- A 36-year-old Daytona Beach man was electrocuted Thursday morning while trimming branches and died a short time later at Florida Hospital Ormond Memorial, police said.

Police and fire rescue personnel responded to a 9-1-1 call at 597 N. Beach St. for the 11:40 a.m. accidental death.

Here is a synopsis of what happened as explained by Ormond Beach police spokesman Lt. Kenny Hayes: Police and Fire Rescue personnel tended to the unconscious victim who was strapped to a large palm tree in the front yard of the residence. Fire rescue personnel successfully freed him from the tree and provided on-scene treatment before rushing him to the hospital.

Damian R. Mays of Daytona Beach was pronounced dead by the attending physician at approximately 12:30 this afternoon.

Mays was working with a crew from Dahryll Brown’s Tree Service trimming palm trees on the property. He had scaled a large palm tree wearing a harness and spikes and was cutting fronds when one of them got caught on a nearby power line. He was attempting to pull the frond from the power line when he was shocked, Hayes said.
