Shopping trip a real chore living in Ponce Inlet

I like to describe Ponce Inlet as a gated community without the gate. Yes, there are restrictions but the upside is that it provides a better quality of life for residents.

Ponce Inlet, they say, provides such a wonderful quality of life that everything you need is at your doorstep. I took me just a few days to figure out that all that was bunk. They don’t leave because it’s too complicated.

My neighbor Diane has it down: with the speed limits, which are strictly enforced, you can make the 5 miles from the Lighthouse to Dunlawton in 12 minutes.

Maybe in a perfect world, but never in mine.

Keep in mind that once you get to Dunlawton, you still aren’t anywhere. It’s another two miles to a Publix.

I am invariably behind the person who is bound and determined to never get a ticket and accomplishes that by driving 20 mph. Did I mention these two lane roads have no passing zones?

So at the ripe old age of 58, I am learning the virtue of patience and failing miserably. I plan my visits to the grocery store like never before: I make a list, plan on being gone at least an hour if I find things quickly, and load a cooler in the car because if I don’t my frozen foods will melt before I get them home.

I just finished one such excursion and made it to and from Publix in the one hour allotted. I was jubilant when I got home until my husband asked if I remembered the bread.
