Big business taking control of us

I don’t know about you but I am so tired of other people making decisions for me without asking if I want them.

For instance, I am with one bank one day and the next day another bank has bought them out and I am now with a bank I did not chose and everything changes. My bank has changed more than three times since I opened an account.

My health insurance was purchased by another company and things started changing there with higher co-pays and different rules. Again I had no say about that other than to change plans and start all over again with new doctors, a different pharmacy and lab and many other annoying changes.

I chose not to make those changes but am not thrilled that the members of the plan were never consulted or given any choices about the issue.

Recently, my email provider changed to a supposed updated email and we were given no choice to continue with the old format. The new format is difficult to maneuver and I don’t like it at all.

Then on the same day Facebook decided to make all these changes to our home pages. The new changes let you know basically what everyone on your friends list is doing moment to moment and they are seeing what you are doing as well. I did not see one positive comment about this change all day on my wall. Everyone was up in arms with this particular move on Facebook’s part. Many threatened to go back to My Space or just quit the social network altogether.

Now, I admit I am not a young chick anymore and less likely to go with the flow, but I am not alone in feeling like I don’t have control of my own life anymore. I feel like the guy in the commercial who gets up in the morning and a new family has replaced his old one. He says, “But I loved my old family.”

That’s how we all feel about big companies we deal with changing things in midstream with no notice and no say in the matter. It seems to be the way of today, but I for one think it is a mistake. I feel as if I personally am being bought and sold at someone else’s whim.

There are many elderly people who do not make change easily but are constantly bombarded with “updates” they don’t understand and can’t figure out how to use.

It is time we all speak up about being used like chess pieces by these big companies. Yeah, yeah, it is simply progress, you say, but it can be done with our knowledge and some pre education so the change is smoother and better understood by all. Then we won’t feel so much like we were forced into something we did not want.
