New Walmart beacon of economic growth for New Smyrna Beach

NSBNews.net video by Henry Frederick / The Walmart supercenter on S.R. 44, near I-95, opened Thursday and NSBNews.net was there with exclusive video coverage, including this interview with City Commissioner Jim Hathaway whose blog appears below.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- The super Walmart has opened in New Smyrna Beach on State Road 44 near Interstate 95 in a time when the City of New Smyrna Beach is focused intently on the creation of jobs and the stimulating of the local economy. This beacon of economic growth shines through as a hallmark example of planning gone right.

This store has created over 230 new jobs and will serve as a catalyst for future growth. Parcels are currently available for new restaurants, fast food joints, box stores, and filling stations.

By properly planning our westward growth, the City of New Smyrna Beach is blessed with the best of both worlds: There's job creation and positive growth coupled with a low impact on the core areas of our city.

The super Walmart is close enough to our city to be an economic boon, but far enough away to avoid the negative impacts to our core shopping districts. In a time when the phrase “smart growth” is tossed around like a rhetorical football, we are practicing it in New Smyrna Beach.

As I have always said, “Prior proper planning prevents a pitiful-poor performance.” Such is the case with the brand new super Walmart here in New Smyrna Beach.
