Edgewater Fall Festival a fun time for kids

Edgewater had a fall festival on Saturday evening, Oct. 29, with a cool breeze and mostly starry skies making it a perfect atmosphere for wearing a costume or long sleeves. This is the second Halloween event in two years and it was held by New Smyrna Beach High School, the Edgewater Police Department and Southeast Volusia YMCA among other local sponsors.

There was no charge for admission, only a donation of one food item per person as kids of all ages attended, many in costumes.

There were inflatables and trick or treating for the very young, and for older children there was the haunted forest. This event was cleverly designed by Kendra Blazi, the drama teacher at New Smyrna Beach High School.

Mrs. Blazi said there were 3000 pounds of food collected last year and she was hoping for at least that much again this time around.

Whitney Brown demonstrates her look for slasher alley. Shannon Satchell, 18, looks creepy with her long hair and dress. Crosses mark a pet cemetary.

This would be later distributed to four charities in Edgewater. And Edgewater Leisure Services had it organized from parking to set up of the large props.

The YMCA held indoor entertainment such as Taekwondo and cheerleading demonstrations, the NSB High Show Dolls and Edgewater Elementary school chorus.

Scooby Doo was a familar character at the Edgewater Fall Festival.

The air was filled with the aroma of grilled hamburgers, hotdogs, and popcorn, while small fries ran through and bounced on inflatables.

The students worked on their costumes and makeup for hours before the event. It was creepy and scary while the Edgewater Police Department made sure it was safe.

I was surprised by a scream several times while walking through the Haunted Forest along the path of the woodsy area behind the stage at the park on Ridgewood Avenue.

There were props arranged by students and eerie music colorful and strobed lights, and lots of creepy sights.

There were so many people in line for the haunted area that some stood there for an hour and later said it was well worth the wait. I'm looking forward to next year's event and am sure it will grow even larger.
