NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. -- Kmart isn't the only anchor tenant store closing. The Food Lion on the beachside is closing, too.

That means a loss of nearly 100 jobs -- about 45 at the Food Lion and another 50 or so at the Kmart, whose store closing was announced Dec. 29 by its parent company, Sears Holding Inc.

New Smyrna Beach stands alone as the city with a double whammy: The Food Lion in the Ocean Village Shopping Center, 4178 S. Atlantic Ave., and the Kmart, which is the anchor for the plaza on State Road 44, which will close in April at the latest.

As in the case of Kmart, New Smyrna Beach city officials have been silent on the issue of jobs while pushing their "Loop" campaign, something that What exactly is the loop? It's a marketing scheme that city officials have yet to truly define.

All told 113 Food Lion Stores across the eastern part of the country are on the chopping block, including two others in Volusia County besides the store in New Smyrna Beach. The other local stores are in Port Orange and Ormond Beach. All three Volusia County Food Lion stores will close their doors for good on or before Feb. 15.
