Daytona Beach International Airport sees 11% increase in passenger traffic

DAYTONA BEACH -- Passenger traffic at Daytona Beach International Airport increased 11 percent in December compared with the previous December.

The airport saw 39,839 passengers traveled through the county- operated airport compared with 35,955 passengers in December 2010. For the 12 months ending December 31, the airport recorded 550,986 passengers, an 11 percent increase over the prior 12 months.

“The strong traffic performance in December continued an upward trend that began in 2009,” said Rick Karl, the airport’s director. “Since late 200,9 Delta Air Lines and U.S Airways have continued to offer an increased number of seats, larger aircraft and competitive fares with each achieving strong passenger loads with the increased capacity.”

Karl said he expects passenger traffic to continue to increase in 2012 as the airport staff continues efforts to attract expanded air service.

The airport wrapped up 2011 with completion of the extensive rehabilitation of the primary runway, 7L-25R. The project also included a new instrument landing system (ILS) on runway 25R that is fully operational.

Also during 2011, Embry Riddle Aeronautical University completed extensive construction improvements to the university campus on the east end of the airport which included complete reconstruction of flight line facilities and new athletic facilities. Many additional improvements are planned or under construction for 2012 at Embry-Riddle.
