Port Orange's Ryan Lochte first American to win gold in London Summer Olympics

Swimmer Ryan Lochte secured America's first olympic gold medal Saturday by winning the 400 meter individual medley in the London summer games as shown in this YouTube video. 

PORT ORANGE -- Ryan Lochte won the 400m individual medley final today at the London games while fellow American Michael Phelps failed to medal, finishing fourth.

The young American, who grew up in Port Orange, now has for gold medals in olympic competition, with this his first, of course, this time around. Phelps who took home gold in this event in the two previous olympic games, was an also ran, after barely qualifying for the finals with the slowest time of all the finalists.

Lochte told Reuters new service, he was prepared not only for the 400 meters, but other swimming events still to come: “I put the work in, so I know it’s my time and I’m ready."
