Remembering Labor Day of bygone years

When I was growing up in St.Augustine, Labor Day always signaled the start of school and the beginning of Fall. I got new Saddle oxfords and a few dark print dresses because it was supposed to be cooler, after all.

Today, school starts in the middle of August and it doesn't get cool until the middle of October.

Clothes have changed too, where kids now wear tshirts, shorts, and uniforms and they have air conditioning in their classrooms.

Labor Day always meant our last chance to spend a week-end at the beach and we always had fried chicken (from mama not Publix) and a big picnic basket under an umbrella mixing sand and potato salad. Those were the days.

We never gave much thought to the fact that our parents were off from work because of the holiday. Things have changed since those days back in school, but everyone always love a day off and we still want a picnic on the beach(now on the river) with fried chicken.

Whatever this holiday means to you or whatever memories it brings back. Relax and enjoy it because we won't have any more days off until Thanksgiving.
