Gratitude to loved ones on Veteran's Day

EDGEWATER This is the time that I always called my Uncle Norm, my father’s brother, to thank him for his service as a medic in the Marines on Iwo Jima for the battle there and wher the famous flag raising took place.

He died last year so I can only hope he still hears me talk to him when I say it again this year. Others in my family were also service members such as my mother’s brother, Ed, who fought in the Battle of the Bulge and my maternal grandfather who was a member of the horse Calvary in World War I.

Veteran’s Day means very much to me not just because of them but also because of the many other friends and family who are in or have served their country with honor. The recent election here was held freely because of all of them and those who continue the tradition of protecting and defending their country as I write this.

Please don’t think of Monday as just a day off from work if you are fortunate enough to have a job that honors the day. Remember why it is important and attend a service for Veterans or go volunteer at a veteran’s nursing home or just thank a family member who gave his/her time as service to their country.

Without them we would all be still under British rule and not be a free and very special independent country. Fly your flags in their honor and have a grand Veteran’s Day!
