NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- With the bars on Flagler Avenue playing host to the New Year's Eve festivities, the city's other heavily invested CRA street was as dead as a door knob, a far cry from the hustle and bustle during traditional business hours.

Still, the holiday lights were pleasing to the eye and the $27,000 CRA Christmas tree, purchased in 2009, at the urging of longtime merchant fixtures Debbie Peterson and Cindy Jones to bring that extra holiday shopping cheer, showed its typical faulty wiring. The bottom rung of lights were out.

Canal Street has the look of a winter wonderland like the small towns in Souther New England and upstate New York, minus the snow, of course. The Christmas tree is aptly located in "Christmas Park."
