Riding out the cold

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- It was cold last night. Enough that I turned the heat on for a couple of hours for the two dogs and the mini macaw. This afternoon, I was riding with the top down on the white TT.

The good thing is there was no frost when I woke up and the temperatures tonight are expected to hover around 54 as compared to last night's 36.

I don't do well in the cold because I have asthma. My chest tightens up and I have to take extra puffs of the Ventolin inhaler, which increases my heart rate. And at the age of 51, I can't afford to take any chances, which is why the heat was turned on. It was 56 inside at 3 in the morning. Within 20 minutes it was 75. Two hours later, I turned it off and got some sleep.

I'm glad I wasn't camped out in the infield of Daytona International Speedway last night.

My sleeping patterns are weird as it is. It's not unusual for me to stay up sometimes two and even three days in a row. Then I crash for a day or more. I know eventually it will catch up with me so I need to be smart about it. There's just never enough time in a time with operating a small business like this.

Much is made of age, but we are all getting older, no matter our age or life circumstances. We are reminded of this by Michael Jordan's 50th birthday. The NBA superstar may be making a comeback. If he were to do this, he'd be better than half the NBA. And he'd be an inspiration to those of us clearly in middle age. He doesn't have anything to prove. Neither do I. But I'm not playing basketball.

I'm just trying to provide for my family the only way I know how. But as my friends remind me, I've got to be smart about it or I won't be around. While this sounds pessimistic, I'm actually thinking positive.

Be smart Henry and it will all work itself out. The countdown is halfway done and the investigative stories are almost researched. Then there is the marketing and advertising. Even with the stress, I'm lovin' it. God bless and let the sun shine on us all and warm our bones.
