Daytona International Speedway president on carnage: 'Our thoughts and prayers are with our race fans'

Daytona International Speedway President Joie Chitwood / Headline SurferDAYTONA BEACH -- Coming off of turn 4 and the final stretch to the checkered flag was a major crash in the Nationwide race that sent a tire and other debris into the stands at Daytona International Speedway, injuring 28 people -- two of them critically.
Daytona International Speedway President Joie Chitwood provided the following statement Saturday evening: "First and foremost, our thoughts and prayers are with our race fans.

"Following the incident, we responded appropriately according to our safety protocols and had emergency medical personnel at the incident immediately. We transported 14 people off property and 14 were treated at our on-track care center. We are in the process of repairing the facility, and we will be ready to go racing tomorrow.

Two of the 14 transported patients are in crtical condition -- a man with head injuries and a minor with unspecified injuries.
