Port Orange cops: Motorist shot by someone in Ford F-150 on Dunlawton Bridge

PORT ORANGE -- A 46-year-old motorist was in critical condition this morning with gunshot wounds suffered just before midnight by an unknown person in another vehicle who pulled up next to his on the Dunlawton Bridge and fired several shots, Port Orange police said.

The victim, Kanwaljit Singh of Port Orange, was shot twice -- in the upper thigh and left side of his lower stomach. Singh had his 13-year-old son with him in the front passenger seat, but he was not injured. Police have no motive for the shooting.

Here is a synopsis of what happened in the 11:50 p.m. incident as described by Assistant Police Chief Wayne Miller: Port Orange Police responded to 207 Dunlawton Avenue regarding a possible shooting incident. Initial investigation indicates a 2005 Ford Focus driven by Singh was traveling westbound over the Port Orange Bridge in the outside lane.
A dark in color, possibly black, late 1980s to early '90s Ford F-150 pick-up truck pulled alongside Singh’s vehicle in the inside lane as the vehicles neared the top of the bridge. Suddenly several gun shots emanated from the aforementioned Ford pick-up truck. These shots struck the left driver’s door of Singh’s vehicle, near the door handle.
"Singh initially pulled over to the shoulder of the bridge and realized he had been struck," Mille sad, adding, "Singh proceeded to call 9-1-1 as he drove to 207 Dunlawton Avenue where he could pull off the roadway. The suspect vehicle (dark Ford pick-up truck) turned south on Halifax Drive and fled the area."

Miller said cops saturated and searched area side streets along this route, but came up empty. 

Singh was transported to Halifax Hospital in Daytona Beach. Singh underwent surgery and has been listed in critical however stable condition, Mille sad he was told by hospital officials.

The suspect Ford F-150 pick-up has a FORD decal or emblem of the Ford make on the sides of the bed toward the rear. Additionally, it has a chrome handle on the tailgate of the vehicle. The tag information is not known at this time or any information about the driver or any other occupants, if any, Miller said.
