DELTONA -- It was shortly after 4 in the morning morning when a resident spotted a suspicious sight -- two people walking down the street, pushing a shopping cart loaded with various items.

And it got even more suspicious when the resident overheard one of them say that he had found some copper. That ewas enough for the good samaritan to call 9-1-1.

“I believe there’s a burglary occurring,” the resident told the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office telecommunicator on the other end of the line. “They’ve got a shopping cart. It sounds like they keep going into this lady’s backyard.”

Responding Sheriff’s deputies began arriving in the vicinity of Hemingway Drive and Addison Street at 4:15 a.m. The first deputy on the scene arrived in time to see a man walk in and out of a wooded area two times.

"When backup arrived, the deputies entered the woods and quickly located two suspects along with a shopping cart containing copper parts and welding equipment," Sheriff's spokesman Gary Davidson said of the early Tuesday burgary. "During a search of the immediate area, deputies also recovered additional stolen property, including jewelry, fishing poles, bed sheets, pillows, an air conditioning unit and a small motor."

The property all came from the home of an 85-year-old woman who lives on Addison Street, but was away when the break-in occurred. Deputies processed the scene, noting that the house and a shed on the property had been ransacked and a car parked in the victim’s garage also was broken into, Davidson said.
