DAYTONA BEACH — Daytona International Speedway is a step closer to securing up to $90 million in state sales-tax incentives over the next three decades, thanks to its investment in the re-election campaigns of state legislators who will vote on approval.
The Speedway is vying for funding under under a program that rewards sports organizations for major improvements through sales tax payments.
Applications for the payments that the Speedway and three other Florida professional sports organizations sent in to last to the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity have all received a green light and only await a "yes" vote of state legislators in the next few months.
The DEO has informed the Florida Legislature that the Speedway and the other applicants "met the criteria established in the statute and has provided a copy of the applications for legislative approval,” said Jessica Sims, the agency's press secretary in Tallahassee, said Friday.
The bipartisan Legislative Budget Commission will meet in the next several weeks within the next month to consider recommending approval of the taxpayer-supported funding for the Speedway, Miami Dolphins, Jacksonville Jaguars and Orlando City Soccer Club.
Should the funding be recommended as expected for any or all of the sports organizations, then the stadium funding consideration will will organizations are recommended, the dollars dedicated to them will go into tube voted on in the upcoming session of the Legislature.
“The buzz around the capital is the Speedway project is the one that is more worthy because of its economic impact,” Ttate Rep. David Santiago said.
But what the Republican from Deltona has not acknowledged is the extensive investment in Speedway monies in his campaign re-election campaign as well as those of his colleagues among the Volusia County delegation.
