NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. -- Even as the country endures a nasty recession, James Pendleton had no problem opening up his wallet and paying about 30 bucks for food and drinks for himself and his two young girls at Thursday's Seaside Fiesta on Flagler Avenue.

And his eldest daughter, Amanda, got a starfish from the Marine Discovery Center booth.

It's the annual street party that provides a boost to merchants, with the summer season right around the corner.

Pendleton and his kids were far from alone. New Smyrna Beach Police Sgt. Eugene Griffith said at least 8,000 people were on hand, some 90 minutes into the three hour event started at 6 p.m.

Pendleton, who was here minus his wife caring for a sick relative, said he doesn't mind spending money for leisurely events like this. "It's excellent, a blast, really pleasant," he said, adding, "You can meet up with friends. There's a lot to do. In the past, festivals were not very family-oriented, just a lot of beer. The coomunity craves more of this kind of family event." Merchants, too, were pleased with the turnout. "It's a success," said Cindy Pool, owner of Beaches Day Spa. "I opened my spa here a year ago and it's been a blessing."
