DAYTONA BEACH, Fla -- State Sen. Dorothy Hukill has died of cervical cancer, her family announced. She was 72.

“Dorothy has passed away peacefully in hospice care surrounded by her family,” Hukill’s son, Jonathan Hukill, wrote in a Facebook post.

“Dorothy was many things. Before everything else, she put her family first. She was a faithful daughter, a loving wife, and a caring mother. She also took great pride in her work, the work of improving the lives of people she cared about.”

Deltona City Commissioner and mayoral candidate Heidi Herzberg, a registered Democrat, said, "RIP Senator Dorothy L. Hukill. I will miss you in many ways."

Judy Reiker, a New Smyrna Beach city commissioner zand Republican loyalist, who opted not to seek a third four-year term said of Hukill, If there was one politician to model herself after, it would be the former state lawmaker.

"You were always straightforward and your word was your bond," Reiker said in a Facebook posting after learning of Hukill's passing. "If something could not be done, you said so. No doublespeak. You are very brave and I am so sorry that the cancer came back. Dorothy, know that you are truly loved by so many."
