FHP: Edgewater motorist killed after striking fence, then a New Smyrna Beach home

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. - A 57-year-old Edgewater who drove his pick-up truck through a fence before skidding and crashing head-on into a home on Glencoe Road, was killed on impact early Monday morning the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The deceased driver was identified as Walter Sumner.

Here is a synopsis of Monday's 3:30 a.m. deadly accident as described by the FHP on Glencoe near South Taylor Road: Sumner was driving his 2002 Ford pick-up south when he struck a fence, skidded along the grass and then the right front corner of a brick house, killing him on impact.

A couple was asleep inside. They were shaken up emotionally from the incident, but were not injured, the FHP said.

Troopers have not ruled out a medical situation or alcohol impairment as possible factors in the deadly single-vehicle crash, which remains under investigation.
