DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Daytona International Speedway has undertaken a new project to further improve the infield for the Rolex 24 At DAYTONA and NASCAR Weekends.

"Daytona International Speedway is putting the construction vehicles to work as the 'World Center of Racing' has undertaken another improvement project in the infield that will provide benefits to the fan experience for Rolex 24 At Daytona and NASCAR weekends," DIS spokesman Andrew Booth said in a press release.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Running second with a few laps left on June 12, 2013, Jason Leffler was involved in a crash during a sprint car heat race at the 58-mile Bridgeport Speedway in  Logan Township, NJ, resulting in his  his car suffering a front suspension failure that caused it to crash into a wall and flip over repeatedly.

Volusia County's Marine Science Center in Ponce Inlet welcomes 1 millionth visitor

PONCE INLET, Fla. -- Nobody is certain whether it was the toddler, Haven, or her baby sister, Hazel, in the stroller with an assist from dad, as to who was actually first through the door.

In the grand scheme of things, it's the Kolluri family of Monroe, La,. officially counted as the 1 millionth visitor Wednesday through the doors of the Marine Science Center in Ponce Inlet.

2016 ReWIND: Top 100 Stories for greater Daytona, Sanford & Orlando (11-15)

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Headline Surfer is counting down the Top 100 stories of 2016 in the greater Daytona Beach, Sanford and Orlando metro area otherwise known as the I-4 corridor of Central Florida through Volusia, Seminole and Orange counties. 

Among the top 5 contenders for the No. 1 story of the year in no particular order so as not to spoil the surprise: The Pulse gay nightclub terrorist massacre; the ugliness of the presidential election between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton; the continuing saga over homelessness in Daytona Beach; records tied or broken in NASCAR races at Daytona International Speedway and Daytona Beach yet again leading Volusia County in homicides. 

So far Headline Surfer has presented recaps for stories ranked 16-100. Previous segments have come in story recaps of 10, but now that the countdown has arrived at the top 20, this current segment captures stories ranked 11-15. Lake Mary HS student & relief aid volunteer Christina Cardona: No quick fix for Puerto Rico

LAKE MARY, Fla. -- The Seminole County School district has seen a dramatic spike in student enrollment in the past couple of weeks.

Dramatic enough to fill the equivalent of three classrooms, district officials say. The sudden influx comes from families leaving Puerto Rico, many of them to Central Florida since the massive devastation from Hurricane Maria.
