ORMOND BEACH -- The Volusia County Sheriff's Office is asking for the public's help in identifying a man who jumped over the front counter of a motel near Ormond Beach and stole money from the cash register Thursday night.

No weapons were involved and no one was injured, Sheriff's spokesman Brandon Haught said.

The confrontation started at approximately 5 p.m. at the Super 8 Motel, 1634 North U.S. Highway 1. A man walked into the motel lobby and asked the clerk about room rates and availability. He then asked for change for a dollar so he could get a soda out of a nearby vending machine.

When the 59-year-old woman opened the register to get change, the man jumped over the counter and grabbed the cash drawer before the woman could close the register. He hurriedly snatched some money from the drawer and then fled back over the counter and out the door. He may have gotten into a vehicle waiting behind a nearby business.

The suspect was described as a white man in his late 40s, about 5 feet 9 and 170 pounds. He had brown hair cut short military style and he was slightly balding. He wore a blue, denim, button-down, short-sleeve shirt, blue jeans, and dark boots. His getaway vehicle may have been a black SUV driven by a blond woman.

Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to call Sheriff's Investigator Richard Fortin at (386) 323-0151 or Crime Stoppers of Northeast Florida, toll-free, at (888) 277-TIPS. Tipsters can also provide information by texting "TIP231 plus the message" to CRIMES. Anyone who provides information to Crime Stoppers will remain anonymous and can qualify for a reward of up to $1,000.
