NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Work began last night on repairs to the North Causeway Bridge that is expected to keep the span inoperable at night through Saturday, forcing motorists and pedestrians alike to rely soley on the South Causeway Bridge for access to and from the beachside.

The detour is from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. to allow crews to remove one of two pairs of hydraulic cylinders that lift the metal span for large boats to pass under.

The Florida Department of Transportation expects the $690,000 project to take 140 days to complete. With the detour, traffic will south on Peninsula Avenue beachside and Riverside Drive on the mainland to the South Causeway.
