NSB High School student wins $20K Dell college scholarship

NEW SMYRNA BEACH — New Smyrna Beach High school seniorGreg Keller has earned a $20,000 college scholarship from the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation, the Volusia County School District announced today.

Greg, the son of Tereasa Flanagan of New Smyrna Beach and a New Smyrna Beach High Advancement Via Individual Determination program student, is one of nine Florida winners. Once he enters college, he will also receive a new Dell laptop and printer.

Since its inception in 2004, the Dell Scholars Program has awarded 1,250 scholarships and paid out $25 million in scholarship funds.

Most Dell Scholars are first-generation college students. To be eligible they must participate in an approved college readiness program such as AVID, and maintain at least a 2.4 grade point average on a 4.0 scale while dealing with personal responsibilities at home or in their communities.

Each Dell Scholar will receive $20,000 to continue his/her higher education for the next six years. Greg will attend the University of North Florida and plans to major in engineering. He is the second New Smyrna Beach High School AVID student to be named a Dell Scholar. In 2008, Mindy Johnson also won this prestigious award and attends Florida Gulf Coast University.
