NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Carol Kelley, principal of New Smyrna Beach High School, is out of work indefinitely after undergoing surgery March 3 for a broken pelvis and hip suffered in an earlier car accident, according to the school's Web site.

Kelley was in the process of crossing State Road 44 from South Glencoe Road shortly before noon that day when she pulled into the path of an oncoming eastbound Pontiac driven by Tyler King, 18, of Sanford, according to New Smyrna Beach police. Kelley's Chevrolet was struck on the driver's sde door, crushing her hip.

Police said Kelley was at fault because she failed to yield he right of way. She didn't receive a ticket at the scene because of the severity of her injuries for which she was transported to Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach..

The other driver was treated for neck and back injuries at Bert Fish Medical Center in New Smyrna Beach.

There is no specific timetable for Kelley's return, though the school's Web site said her "goal is to return to work before graduation on May 20," adding she wants to extend her "thanks for all of the cards, phone calls, thoughts and prayers from the community."
